Prolotherapy Side-Effects and How to Minimize Them

Prolotherapy is a pain treatment method that involves fluid injection. The therapy is used to treat ligaments, bone joints, cartilages, and tendons that have faced deterioration owing to injury, disease, or aging. When everything goes smoothly, prolotherapy can provide unmatched lubrication and nourishment to the area where it is performed. However, sometimes, things may go wrong, leading to side-effects.

Side-effects the therapy may cause

While prolotherapy is regarded as a relatively safe option overall, it may cause side-effects in a small number of cases. As the treatment involves injection, some patients may experience intense pain in the region for a few days. Others may find the affected region bruised. The occurrence of bleeding due to the therapy is a possibility, too. In addition to that, the treatment may cause swelling, stiffness, and joint effusion. Sometimes, a patient may experience nerve, ligament, or tendon injury as a result of undergoing the therapy, as well. Lung puncture is another problem that may be caused by the therapy. Apart from that, in a very small number of cases, the therapy may lead to infections of different kinds.

How to lower the odds

Most of the side-effects of prolotherapy arise due to not taking proper caution. By selecting the right therapist, the risk of any side-effect arising can be decreased significantly. In addition to that, proper care can be taken while eating food during the treatment phase. For instance, foods like caffeine and alcohol are better avoided for a while as such foods may hamper healing. Reliance on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided, too.
